Yunupingu released his self titled solo album in February 2008, showcasing an aspect of Aboriginal music rarely heard.

The April 2008 issue of Rolling Stone declared Gurrumul as “Australia’s Most Important Voice.”

Born blind from birth in 1970, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a powerhouse of musical creativity. Geoffrey, or Gudjuk as he is also called, is from the Gumatj nation, his mother from the Galpu nation both from North East Arnhemland. He lives in Galiwinku on Elcho Island.

A former member of Yothu Yindi and founding member of Saltwater Band, Gurrumul’s solo excursions highlight his amazing talent as a singer/songwriter/musician, his beautiful voice singing the songs of his Gumatj country will never leave you.

And rather than focusing on traditional Aboriginal instruments, Yunupingu plays mainly a soft double bass and an acoustic guitar. Combined with a piercing voice, primarily singing in native languages, Gurrumul's music is hypnotic.
